MSHS SEEKS INSPIRING GARDENS AND GARDENERS
Gardens—whether they beautify a neighborhood or teach kids how to grow vegetables—it’s hard not to be inspired by the love and care that gardeners put into them. The Minnesota State Horticultural Society seeks nominations for such gardens and gardeners for their annual State Awards.
You can nominate gardeners who have made outstanding contributions to greening efforts in public gardens or community projects; individuals, projects and activities of neighborhood groups; garden clubs and organizations that have contributed to rejuvenating communities and have brightened our world through plants.
Capture the beauty of the gardens now with high resolution digital photos, as award winners will be featured in Northern Gardener magazine and on www.northerngardener.org, as well as at MSHS’ annual State Awards and Recognition Event.
For more information on specific awards and the nomination form, visit www.northerngardener.org, click on the Classes/Programs drop down box and select “Awards”. If you have questions about submitting a nomination, call 651-643-3601 / 1-800-676-6747 ext. 211.
Completed nomination forms and publication-worthy digital images must be received by Monday, November 2, 2009. The date of the State Awards and Recognition Event will be announced at a later date.

It's National Buckthorn Awareness Week...

Do You Know Where Your Buckthorn Is???

As the Mamas and the Papas sang long ago:

All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are bro..own)
and the sky is grey (and the sky is grey...ey)...

But NOT SO if the shrub/tree is the alien exotic species commonly known as BUCKTHORN (Common Buckthorn or Glossy Buckthorn).  This time of year there are only a few shrubs and trees that still have green leaves, including lilacs (not bad) and buckthorn (VERY BAD - see below).  November is a prime time to look around to see a) if you have buckthorn on your property and b) sadly, how much of it IS around in general, with more spreading to new areas every year.  Buckthorn is a real problem and threat to the ecosystems of Duluth's forests and parks, including Hartley.

If you need help identifying what it looks like, there is good information and a nice photo on this web site:
http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/rhca1.htm

If you determine that you indeed have buckthorn, please remove it.  Watch out especially for female trees bearing loads of black berries this time of year.  There are many nice native shrubs you can use to replace the buckthorn, including black chokeberry, elderberry, serviceberry, hazelnut, various viburnums or dogwoods to name a few.

HOW to remove: pull smaller plants, aiming to get the roots too.  Larger trees/shrubs can be cut but the remaining stump must be dabbed with an appropriate herbicide like undiluted Roundup to prevent 101 new little trees from sprouting up from the old stump.  This is still a good time of year for removal.  (Treating stumps during spring sap flow is not recommended.)

A few quotes from the Plant Conservation Alliance web site:

ECOLOGICAL THREAT
Exotic buckthorns tend to form dense, even-aged thickets, crowding and shading out native shrubs and herbs, often completely obliterating them. Dense buckthorn seedlings prevent native tree and shrub regeneration.

HABITAT IN THE UNITED STATES
...An invader mainly of open oak woods, deadfall openings in woodlands, and woods edges, it may also be found in prairies and open fields. It is tolerant of many soil types, well drained sand, clay, poorly drained calcareous, neutral or alkaline, wet or dry.

BACKGROUND
Common buckthorn was introduced to North America as an ornamental shrub, for fence rows, and wildlife habitat. Introduction of buckthorn was based on its hardiness and ability to thrive in a variety of soil and light conditions.

And THAT is part of the problem - it grows just about anywhere, easily out-competing other plants.

Remember: Friends don't let friends grow buckthorn.  Help your friends and neighbors stamp out buckthorn too!
